When the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, some of them came to Dubrovnik, and by and large became a community of traders who would frequent the local synagogue. They continued to face persecution over the centuries, but mainly in the area around Dubrovnik, and they only gained legal status under Napoleon Bonaparte’s rule. Thanks to the Holocaust, the 250 strong community has whittled down to 30 – 40 as of 2001. The Baroque synagogue remains functional is the oldest Shephardic synagogue in the world. The museum houses many old relics, including a 13th century silver Torah. It’s small, but richly decorated, and expounds the history of the Jewish community here.
