Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey is an abbey of around 20 nuns who are generally referred to as Trappistines. They are the members of the Catholic Church which is dedicated to Mother Marry. The nuns of Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey spend their daily lives in prayers, choirs, Lectio Divina, and manual labour. Earnings of the abbey depend on candy making and farming on the bluffs of river Mississippi. You will be welcomed here with a warm retreat and your stay can be confirmed at one of their several guest houses on prior booking. Don’t miss to taste the popular candies and creamy caramels prepared by the nuns of this abbey.

  • Even though the shop was not open that day, one of the ladies took time to help us. Beautiful place. The views are spectacular.

  • A serene gem just outside of Dubuque. Visit, be blessed and dont forget to pick up some candies in the store.

  • Wonderful province, I visited on the Assumption of Our Lady in 2016 and had a lovely retreat. This was my first retreat with the Cistercians. The fog that comes from the Mississippi river at sunrise that time of year is something to see. I was able to wake up and pray the Matins and sing some of the prayers as well as work a little with the sisters and they were really kind to return my wool socks when I left them behind! I'm glad to find out some of them worked in post-Soviet Russia in their youth, as that's where I'm from - Belarus. The sung liturgy is absolutely beautiful, nothing like I've encountered at a parish, with unique hymns and antiphons that are a profound and meditative praise of God. Loved the stay!

  • This is a lovely setting for inspired work. The caramels are divine, but so is the mission of the hands behind them.

  • What a lovely and relaxing place this is! The caramels can't be beat, either!
