Nestled close to the San Juan National Forest, the postcard town of Durango in Colorado welcomes adventure sport enthusiasts of all age groups and interests. The evergreen, thick wilderness of the forest is contrasted by the gushing Animas River that travels right past the historic Durango downtown. The beauty of this flowing water body is best seen from the trail located right next to the river as it flows besides the most visited locations in Durango. The river trail is one of the fastest ways to move across town and you will see plenty of people walking on it at all times of the day. Durango is best explored on foot. Most of the buildings are quite close to each other so a walk through the streets often ends up being a walk through the lanes of time. Durango owes its existence to the gold and silver mines of San Juan. It was initially a rail depot that would unload all the minerals mined in the forests. This business gave rise to the supplementary services that are required in a neighbourhood and thus, a town was formed. After that there was no looking back. Durango expanded to accommodate the various services required by its citizens. Natural springs were discovered at various locations in the San Juan forest and people began to visit the town to cure themselves of their illnesses. With the advent of adventure sports, participants began to explore the forest and laid trails for hiking. The gently flowing streams beckoned kayaks and canoes and soon, adventure sports became a major attraction in the city. The beautiful and serene lakes in the forest proved to be ideal locations for overnight camps in summer. Snows began to cover the valley in winter and skiing started taking place near this town. The town contributed a great deal in the Second World War. High demand for ores from the mines and farming to support the population led to the establishment of Fort Lewis College. Days of peace meant artistic performances and displays in the theatre and galleries. These have shaped Durango into the tourist hub that it is today. A visit to this town will be valued by nature lovers, but those who are here to experience the simple life will not be disappointed either.
