What was originally a power plant has now been converted into a museum of science and a city landmark. The Powerhouse Science Center was established by the Children’s Museum of Durango. It basically focuses on the post-modern use of energy for several purposes. Some of these include operating hydrogen powered race cars, locally mined energy products, upcoming methods of electricity production etc. The power plant that was previously located in the premises was one of the first to produce alternating current (AC). It is likely that the tiny town of Durango was using this electricity way ahead of all the major cities in the country. This is one of the reasons why the museum is dedicated to the energy utilisation and creation. The museum is in the historic Downtown Durango just off the scenic River Trail.

Powerhouse Science Center Reviews & Ratings
I took my son there many years ago when I was married. Lots of hands on activities to engage the mind. I chanced upon it more recently when I was dating a single mom with two kids. Her son was rather exuberant, so this was the perfect place for him to expend some of that excess energy.
Nice, fun science activities. Friendly and helpful staff. We took our grandchildren, ages 10-13, there two days in a row. They really liked it.
I was volunteering there and It's a great place to help out your community. The people there are super friendly. If you like yard work this is the place to help out!
A fantastic local experience with global ambition. Good for the scientific, crafty, and childlike in all of us!
One of the coolest buildings, for what seems like a long ways! I see kids from Gallup coming in on a bus to go there. So cool! I love going to events here and if I have the time do some of the experiments they have set up. Its a really fun place for kids of all ages.
