About Umgeni River Bird Park, Durban
Once upon a time, this was a quarry filled with near stagnant water. A bird fanatic named Dr. Alan Abery transformed the quarry into a lush and wet avian sanctuary, one of the best of its kind in the world. 4500 birds from over 400 different species reside in the park, filling all of it with their calls and the sound of their flapping wings. The park has several much vaunted man made waterfalls. Inside its boundaries, 17 of the worlds threatened bird species are bred and nurtured, making it one of the more important conservatories in the world. One of the best things about the park is its magnificent bird show held inside the aviary. For almost two decades now, trained birds have been brought close to the viewer, including many critically endangered species. Make sure to bring your cameras!

Umgeni River Bird Park, Durban Reviews
If you haven't yet been to the Umgeni River Bird Park it is well worth making a trip there! Something for everyone; be it sitting in one of the enclosures and watching the magnificent and brightly coloured bird life filling the trees around you or even sitting on your shoulder; or walking through and admiring the wide variety of local and international species; spending some time in the nursery with the new arrivals; or sitting having an amazing cappuccino or beverage while the kids play on the swings, jungle gym or jumping castle. A must though is to go watch the bird show. Really a treat for young and old. We went with the family ranging from our 2 year old right through to great granny at 89! We will be back for sure.
A most beautiful sanctuary set in a lush tropical park that provides lovely shade on a hot day. Most birds are in cages, but you can enter some larger aviaries, too. And some birds are just flying around freely. The free flight bird show (11 and 2pm) is great fun. There are play areas for kids, a cafe, and you can buy foof to feed the lorakeets which readily hop onto your hand. A really nice place! There's a bit of refurbishment going on, and one path is closed to give the birds privacy for breeding. Fair enough, but it means you can't see all of the area and birds at the mo (April 2018), hence 4 not 5 stars.
Lovely day. Peaceful walk around the gardens. Lots of birds. Interactive free flight bird display. Children's play area and restaurant well managed and clean.
OMG! I loved it here... There are so many kind of birds.. The place is so colourful and I enjoyed feeding them.
It's a very nice and relaxing place for the whole family. The bird show was excellent and very informative, the kids enjoyed it so much.
