Umgeni River Bird Park - Review

Once upon a time, this was a quarry filled with near stagnant water. A bird fanatic named Dr. Alan Abery transformed the quarry into a lush and wet avian sanctuary, one of the best of its kind in the world. 4500 birds from over 400 different species reside in the park, filling all of it with their calls and the sound of their flapping wings. The park has several much vaunted man made waterfalls. Inside its boundaries, 17 of the worlds threatened bird species are bred and nurtured, making it one of the more important conservatories in the world. One of the best things about the park is its magnificent bird show held inside the aviary. For almost two decades now, trained birds have been brought close to the viewer, including many critically endangered species. Make sure to bring your cameras!

  • It must be at least 20 years since I last visited the bird park, but wow - I was impressed. The park is beautifully maintained, clean, neat and fun. There is a wonderful selection of birds in open air enclosures, aviaries and caged areas. The setting is gorgeous, with a natural waterfall backdrop. And when kids need a break there is a very nice (but sandy) playground and a small, buy decent kiosk with a good selection of basic meals (burgers and chips), scones, ice creams, snacks etc. We will definitely be back.

  • Zoo for birds. Lots of interesting birds to see. Makes for a nice outing and it won't take the whole day so one can do other things as well. Probably plan to spend at least an hour and half there. Nice for kids

  • Still a great place to come, thanks to some great renovations in recent years. They also had a jumping castle on a Saturday and the bird show was a lot of fun. My kids had lots of fun looking at all the birds!

  • Great for family outing. Some really interesting/exotic birds to see. Affordable. Nice cafe with light meals (sandwiches etc) also at a reasonable price.

  • Really surprised! Lovely and clean bird park. Great show. Lots of different and unusual birds. Nice tea garden. Play area for little people. You can tell the birds are loved and well looked after. Great outing for everyone!!
