The Durres Amphitheater nestled in the heart of the city of Durres dates back to AD 2nd century during the reign of the emperor Trajan. The amphitheatre has suffered destruction by earthquakes in sixth and tenth centuries and as it is built on modern housing of Durres on all sides, structural deficiencies are prevalent, making it enlisted among Europe’s most dangerous heritage sites. Discovered in 1966, the Durres Amphitheater is the largest of its kind in the Balkan Peninsula. The amphitheatre is elliptical in shape with galleries and staircases within the (201x138x66) cubic feet arena with capacity of 20000. The paintings and mosaics on the chapel are preserved.
