There are a number of Nageshwar temples found around India but the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Dwarka is the most famous one. This particular temple finds it’s mention in holy scriptures and “puranas”- giving it a special importance especially for historians and archaeologists. A story goes that a demon called Daruka attacked a Shiva devotee and imprisoned him in his under-water city along with other people. The devotee prayed to Shiva and he appeared to kill the demon. He later made this jyotirlingam his home and even today, devotees from all around the country come here to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings.

The temple has a “shivlingam” which is an idol of Lord Shiva- the god of destruction who is part of the Trimurti consisting of Brahma and Vishnu. You can find devotees come to the temple in the early mornings to offer milk to the lingam.

Highlights of the temple include:

  • A 25-meter tall statue of Lord Shiva
  • The pond and garden that is located on the temple grounds and offer a relaxing spot for visitors.

The architecture of the place capsules the grandeur of the temple with highly detailed sections that frame the “shikhar” and the doorways. Walk into the nearby forest and you find an ancient temple that is part of the Darukavan forest which mythology says was gifted to the wife of the demon who was a devotee of Lord Shiva’s wife Parvati.

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple Reviews & Ratings

  • Clean premises with lots of big tress giving shades and greenery. The big statue of Lord Shiva is the main attraction. Best time to visit will be evening.

  • It's a holy Hindu temple. The ambience is good. Wearing dhoti is compulsory for men and the dhoti is provided in the temple only. But I only wonder that the offerings that we offer like the naag pair in silver and the coconut etc keeps recirculating inside the.mandir by the vendors .apart from that a must visit spot in Gujarat. Good for spiritual purposes
