East Timor Overview

It’s almost difficult to ignore the beauty of a nation located in the vicinity of the Indonesian Archipelago and pay attention to its culture and history. But with East Timor, you will find a perfect amalgamation of all three. In the past it used to be a country ruined by the hand of history but today it is a country made by its tryst with history. First a Portuguese colony, then invaded by Indonesians and a lot of lives were lost in this whole process but in the year 2002, the country was given its deserving independent status.

Visa Procedure

Most countries are granted a visa on arrival. Portugal Nationals can enter East Timor visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism purposes. Indonesian nationals can obtain visa on arrival at any border post,  Dili International airport , Dili Sea Port and all land border crossings.

All other nationals can procure a visa on arrival, only when they arrive through the Dili Sea Port or Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport. A single entry visa is valid for 30 days and is granted for about US$30. Transit visas are available for stays of lesser than three days for a fee of US$20. There is no transit without a visa option that you can opt for in East Timor. Visitors are told to have the necessary amount for the payment of visa fees in US Dollars cash upon arrival at the border.

The "visa on arrival" option is not available at the land border, except for Indonesian Nationals. Those intending to enter through the border must apply in advance for a Visa Application Authorization, which is then presented to an immigration official at the border. Remember to have a visa that is valid for 6 months.
