The Duck Pond off the South Gate Drive of Virginia Tech Campus is one of the most popular relaxing spot for the university students and the visitors alike. In a close proximity of the Smithfield Plantation, the Duck Pond is a safe abode to the Black Crowned Night Heron, Blue Herons and the Green Herons. While during summer, you can spot the Northern Flicker and Red-Eyed Vireo, during winter and fall Migration, you will be amazed to see a plethora of shorebirds like Sandpipers, Greater Yellowlegs, American Pipit, Common Snipe and Waterfowls like Bufflehead and Ring-Necked Ducks. Warblers, Flycatchers are seen in abundance as the weed outgrowths and shrub laden banks of the pond are filled with a variety of damselflies.
