Commissioned by Sultan Selim II and built by Mimar Sinan in the 16th century, this Islamic architecture masterpiece is the most elegant summary of Ottoman architectural philosophy. The interiors and exteriors are highly symmetrical, a distinctive feature that was designed to draw the eye and centralise the rapidly expanding city. The highlights to notice are:
- How, unusually for mosques, this one was designed to appear to be a single unit rather than multiple ones.
- The four up-shooting minarets that focus attention on the central dome (they are the second tallest in the world).
- The humbly decorated interiors, with a great number of small windows that filter in the light.
- The highly ornately decorated dome.
- The calligraphy on the dome.
The mosque is in the centre of a kulliye (a neighbourhood complex consisting of a row of shops, a time-keepers rooms and a madrassa).

Selimiye Mosque Reviews & Ratings
The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II, and was built by the famous architect Mimar Sinan between 1568 and 1575. It was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece(better than blue mosque in Istanbul) and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture. Its height is at the main Dome 31.2 m, at the four minarets 43 m. This buildind draw attention everyone in the city, because is located on a small hill, and for its huge structure. In 2011 selected as a landmark of UNESCO. You ought to visit this place if you expect to be at Edirne.
A UNESCO world heritage site and architectural masterpiece for the big open space on the inside. Be sure to follow the customs, remove your shoes before stepping on the carpet and inside, wear clothes that go beyond your shoulders and knees and women wear a headscarf. Also a nice surrounding area with various museums and a bazaar, and very close to the town centre.
An architectural piece of art. A gorgeous building and an experience on it own. I had great time exploring the patterns of the colours inside the mosque and outside of it. Great place, totally recommended!!
