Eindhoven Tourism

Tucked away in the beautiful country that is the Netherlands, Eindhoven is a rarely explored but one of the gems of the tourism industry in the land. The city’s name is made up two regional words. ‘Eind’ means end and ‘hove’ means a section of land. It is likely that this name was given to this charming town owing to its proximity to the Dutch border. Eindhoven is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. The city is made up of a group of former villages that now make up the metropolitan area of Eindhoven. The localities of Tongelre, Stratum, Strijp, Centrum were formerly tiny villages that came closer to each other as the population increased during the industrial age. This was the era in which Eindhoven shot into fame. The city entered the limelight when Philips discovered the first incandescent lightbulb in Eindhoven. The innovator then set up a manufacturing center in the city, which provided employment to hundreds of people in the country. Eindhoven’s tryst with modernity and style began with Philips and till date, it is a major technology and innovation hub in the Netherlands. Another commercial giant in Eindhoven is DAF Trucks. The two innovation-based companies added a flair of technology in the constitution of Eindhoven. Today, the city is a major technology hub in the Europe and is also the home of the University of Technology. Its cultural past and the industrial present combined to give rise to a culture of design in Eindhoven. It is also known as the Design Capital of the Netherlands. Many of the local festivals exhibit these dimensions of the city in their events. With so much innovation and design in one place, it is impossible for the city to not have enough shopping centres where the common public can buy the innovations for themselves. Though it is not a touristy city, Eindhoven is rich in history and culture despite being an innovation hub and a former industrial center. It is amazing to see how these two contrasting elements live side-by-side in utter harmony. Plan a visit to Eindhoven for a holiday like no other in the Netherlands.
