The oval Amphitheatre of El Jem is often mistaken as a Colosseum with its massive structure. This complex was built by the Romans in the reign of proconsul Gordian and has an infamous history of holding Gladiator shows in it. However, the amphitheater also held small chariot races to entertain the audience. The ruins of the bricks tell a thousand story of the perilous fate of the slaves who encountered the lions here. The damaged and ruined amphitheater speaks two versions of its account. The Turks during the struggle with the Ottomans bombarded the amphitheater walls to take out the rebels inside. While another story suggests that the full construction of the complex never ended. This World Heritage Site also holds the annual Festival International de musique symphonique d’El Jem.
