The Busse Forest or the Ned Brown Forest Reserve sprawling at an area of 3700 acres is a mature Great Lakes hardwood forest. The fragments of Flatwoods are laden with red maple, swamp white oak, and black ash. The typical northern Illinois forest with basswood, hickory, sugar maple and white oak are also evident in this reserve. The park offers activities like hiking, wildlife watching, biking, fishing, and kayaking. The 10.4 miles of paved bicycle trail and the 7.3 miles loop through Busse Woods reserve are perfect for walking and biking. The 590-acre Busse Lake is also rich in the habitat of birds like Herons, Canadian Geese, and Egrets; it can be accessed with a kayak or boat. Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Northern Pike, Walleye and many other fishes are abundant in the lake.
