Demodara Loop is a spiral railway loop that has been called “Civil Engineering Wonders of Sri Lanka Railways”. The rail track was built in a loop in an attempt to compensate the huge difference in the elevation as the locomotive was not capable of climbing a higher gradient slope. The Demodara tunnel along with the station’s railway entrance is called the Demodara Loop. Here you can see the train passing from one side, making a loop around the mountain and then reappearing from the other side. You can take a train from Ella to Demodara and travel along this loop or reach the loop by car and witness the train making a spiral turn on this marvellous engineering wonder. Some visitors may choose to hike but distance is relatively longer and takes almost one and a half hours to reach.
- Take a train ride from Ella to Demodara. Once there, quickly make your way past the car park out the station so you can watch the train make a loop.
- If hiking along the tracks, make sure to look out for trains as there are a lot of bends along the route and you may miss the approaching train.
- By train

This is a wonderful railway station and the train loop incident is bit confusing.but you need to walk around this railway tracks to understand the real incident and wonderful place to take photographs.
An extraordinary railway track and amazing landscape and underground tunnel exists here, this was built in the time of English ruled the country, local Labor had designed the railway track and the tunnel to avoid natural blocks. But local folks say that the labor was killed by the supervisor.
Been to this place for about 3 or 4 times.. it's a nice place... if you are coming from colombo in train... take the night mail train first or second class. Get down here.. you can enjoy a nice railway walk... you'd come across nine arches bridge.. and many astonishing landscapes.. The iron bridge and railway loop is an amazing experience.
Beautiful station in Badulla line
The station built in 1923 and it is highly popular among local and foreign tourist due to its spiral rail line (also called as circular rail line) at this location (known as 'Demodara Loop’ also known as ‘Demodara Looping the Loop’). Further, it is considered the only loop in the world with a railway station situated perfectly over the tunnel at spiral / circular loop.
