Situated between the two railway stations of Ella and Demodara, is a viaduct which was built during the British Colonial period and is the largest viaduct in Sri Lanka. The bridge was built in 1921 with only stones, bricks and cement and without making use of any steel and is considered an Engineering marvel in Sri Lanka’s history. This bridge stands at almost 100 feet and has nine arches, hence the name Nice Arch Bridge. Locals say that when you stand underneath the bridge and look up at the sky, you will see nine skies through its nine arches and hence it is also known as “Ahas namaye palama” in Sinhalese language which means Nine Skies Bridge. Located at almost 3.5 kilometres from Ella Railway Station, a hike along the railway tracks will take you the bridge in about an hour.
