Erlangen houses some of the most well-preserved baroque architecture in all of Germany. Being a university town, the city has a large student population and consequently, numerous inexpensive bars and cafes. Cuisines from all over the world can be found here, including Greek. 1. Bergkirchweih

The Bergkirchweih is an annual two-week-long beer festival held during the 12 days before and after Pentecostal, in May. It has been celebrated in Erlangen since the 18th century. The locals refer to this period as the fifth season. Beer is served on wooden tables in stoneware liter jugs under trees of the bergs. The berg is a craggy tree-lined hill with caves that function as beer cellars owned by local brewers. the festival attracts over a million visitors every year. Held outdoors, it features live music, carnival rides and typical Franconian food stalls with offerings like bratwurst, pretzels, suckling pig and roasted almonds.

2. Burgberg Hill

The Burgberg or Berg hill is a 332 meters tall hill, quarried in the 15th century. Its southern slopes have been used as beer cellars by local breweries since 1675. The naturally cool temperatures under the berg make storage conditions ideal. This cellar storage has been instrumental in making Enlargen a frontrunner in beer exports. The Berg hill is also the site of the famous Bergkirchweih festival celebrated in Enlargen every year.

The Municipal Museum displays the history of Erlangen from prehistoric times to medieval Erlang and from there to its ascent into the 20th century. The museum focuses on the architecture and its baroque influence, the workshops and manufacturing units run by the Huguenots, the residences and the university. The museum has displays about the city’s culture, science, medical advancements, , contemporary history and even plastic arts.

4.Castle Markgrafenschloss

The castle dates between 1700 and 1704. It has been constructed in the Baroque style, with an influence of French classicism. At present, the castle houses the administration offices of the University. However, architecture enthusiasts can visit between office hours.

5. Huguenottenplatz Farmers’ Market

Of all the foreign settlers in Erlangen, perhaps the biggest mark was left by the French Protestants. The Huguenots’ legacy has been immortalized in the centrally situated Huguenottenplatz which is the site for the daily farmers market where some of the freshest fruits, vegetables, cheeses and meats are sold.

6. Sculpture Garden

The public garden situated on the southern slope of the Berg Hill is called the sculpture garden because it houses 17 statues built by the famous sculptor Heinrich Kirchner. The works have an underlying theme of the connection between man and nature. The gardens are open daily for public visits.

7. Sockmakers’ Houses

The Huguenots brought the traditions of felt hats and gloves and socks to Erlangen. These houses are the early manufacturing floors of such items and they date back as early as 1720 to 1740. Sock making eventually became one of the main sources of income for the city. Hence such houses abound.

Built between 1728 and 1730, the Palais Stutterheim was originally intended to serve as the district administration official’s residence. After changing ownership briefly in the 1800s, till 1971, it served as the town hall. Afterwards, it was converted to the city library and art gallery. 9.Palace Garden

The inevitable baroque complex in the park shows a heavy influence of Versailles. However, the eastern part was redone in an English style. The most famous object in the garden is the fountain, designed by Elias Rantz in 1705. It is layered, showing the Huguenots at the bottom, the ancient deities in the middle and Margrave Christian Ernst on the top. This statue at the top remains unfinished. The stone for this construction was quarried from the Berg hill. The garden also offers the beauty of the flowerbeds, hedgerows and lawns. 10. Margrave Theatre and Grand Ballroom

The Margrave Theatre is the oldest operational Baroque theatre in Southern Germany. It was built in 1715-1719, influenced by Italian opera theatres. The interior was refurbished in the Rococo style in 1743. The Grand Ballroom was built to stage Redouten, the glittering balls organized back in the day.the Ballroom is connected to the Theatre and is still in use till date. 11. Huguenot Church

This Protestant Reformist Church was the first French Protestant church built outside of France. This marked the beginning of the establishment of the New Town in Enlargen. Must-see views within the church are the valuable pulpit from 1700 and the baroque organ which dates to 1755/64.

12. Botanical Garden

The botanical garden was instituted for use by the University in 1747. It features a wide range of plants from different countries and different climates, spanning an area of about five acres. The garden also has greenhouses where several tropical and sub-tropical plants are grown. Flora enthusiasts will appreciate the wonders of the garden and its greenhouses.

Located in the heart of the city, this garden was built due to a collaborative effort by Enlargen’s churches, in 2007. It has displays in the forms of placards, boards, signs, statues and sculptures that bring out the teachings and the various topics of the Bible. Strategically placed benches allow for a restful and peaceful calm to be experienced by the visitor.

14. Café Mengin

Café Mengin is situated close to the market square, right next to the Enlargen Schloss. It serves incredible German fare as well as vegetarian foods. The outdoors seating arrangement of the café affords visitors with spectacular views of the city’s main garden.
