Poltimore House is of utmost importance to Exeter and Devon, historically and architecturally.

It was an extremely beautiful place in 1900 and there have been various attempts to restore it to its exact original form. It was home to the Bampfylde family for around five centuries. In 1921 it went on to become Poltimore College, a girls' school. In 1940, it became the war-time home of Dover College for boys. From 1945 - 1975 Poltimore served as a hospital, Poltimore Hospital which was initially private and went into the hands of National Health Services.

After a short span it was increasingly neglected and vandalized, slipping rapidly into decay. Fortunately, efforts from English Heritage, East Devon District Council and eventually the Buildings at Risk Trust saved it from complete destruction. Since 2000, with its acquisition by the Poltimore House Trust and with the aid of East Devon District Council, its future has looked a lot more secure.

This historic house has over the years attracted many people and groups. The enthusiasm for finding a permanent solution to restore Poltimore House and its grounds continues. But even in its present condition, it is a beautiful place to visit.
