“If you adore birch and alder and the wilderness areas these pioneering trees frequent then Stone Lane Gardens is not to be missed. It’s not just a National Collection, it is a reminder of a world too precious to be ignored.”

Roy Lancaster

Stone Lane Gardens is a spectacular water garden spread over 5 acre woodland on one of Dartmoor National Park that does not fail to enchant and inspire in any season. It is famous for National Collections of Birch and Alder trees. The garden is threaded with pools and streams that run alongside the mesmerizing greenery. Present here is also a varied tapestry which is adorned with various shade plants.

The garden was set up back in 1971 as a space for Kenneth Ashburner. He used it to plant the birch and alder trees he acquired on trips abroad as well as trees gifted to him by other collectors. Kenneth collected more seeds and initially planted them in his nursery, but the space was restraining so he planted them out in the garden. Gradual and artfully done planning created the landscape of the garden you see today. The garden is filled with unusual and beautiful trees, many of them rarely visible or found in the UK.
