Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course Reviews & Ratings
Played Goldsboro Municipal during the week, mid-morning. The course has great visual lines, wide but not easy fairways, and mature stands of pine as you would expect from a 70+ year old track. Pros - The fairways are lush and the greens roll true, if not particularly fast - The rough is a consistent 2-3 inches and lush, which is simpler to play from than variable rough - The bunkers are gorgeous, full of white sand and well maintained - There are 6 drivable/nearly drivable par 4s, protected by heavy bunkering, water, and/or turning fairways; good tee shots will be rewarded - The practice facilities are impressive for a municipal course, with a nice driving range and a big putting green with multiple tiers and lots of space to dial in short game shots - The clubhouse is large and clean, with what seem to be newly renovated bathrooms and a shower; food prices are very reasonable, e.g., $1 for a candy bar - The prices are great at under $30 to ride, and the pace of play was as fast as we cared to make it (we played as a twosome in 2.75 hours taking our time) - Aesthetics: I loved how we were separated by 20-40 yards from the adjacent holes on both sides, but the mature stands of pines made it feel like we were secluded, while the age of the pines led to there being almost no underbrush, so slightly errant shots were not heavily penalized Neutral - Perhaps 3 or 4 holes require a shaped tee shot, but the rest are straight shots - Due to the thick rough, you need to mind where your tee shot lands, as it is easy to lose track of shots even a few feet off the fairway - The greens are big, most with multiple distinct landing zones that will dictate different shots based on pin position; if you have time, check out the green before hitting your approach, as things are not always as they seem from 120 yards out Cons - Given the number of straight tee shots, wide fairways, and short yardages from all tees (6200y max), the course is on the simple side - There is no grill, so only prepackaged snacks, drinks, and hot dogs are available Overall, the course still felt very much like the country club it once was; very well-maintained, visually beautiful in the tradition of old southern courses, and scorable, with a premium on tee shots and approaches. A bit of a hike from Raleigh, but well worth the occasional visit.
