Built towards the end of 18th century the church is not easy to miss with its double bell towers and an almost haunting feel to it.The church is most popular for its facades and interiors- intricate and true to the 18th century period.
However, the attractions behind the church is what truly makes it special. The Capela dos Ossos, located behind the main church has skulls and bones of 1000 monks who died after a long service- resonating the message of ‘Impermanence of the body’.
Not for the weak hearted, the skulls and bones create quite an impactful image for all its visitors.
- Be prepared to look at bones and skulls. If you are travelling with children who might not take it well, take the necessary precautions.
- Monday- Friday: Can close at 5.00 pm.
- Mass at the Church – 9.00 am on Sunday.

A stunning church and ossuary (the bone chapel). Very decadent church and the chapel really provoked thought. Definitely worth the 2€ for the visit.
The church is amazing. With a beautifully ornate interior and breathtaking artwork it is well worth a visit. I loved the bone chapel, an amazing sight and experience.
Truly beautiful inside and out. A must see in Faro, especially the Chapel Of Bones. It shakes you to the foundation seeing the skills and bones of over 1200 monks.
Beautiful church. But most people come here for the bone chapel in the back. Small but beautiful. It's closed for lunch from 12-3pm. Opening hours were in the morning and then 3-6pm. If you're in Faro or doing a day trip (like we did) I'd suggest taking a 30 mins to check it out. It's 2 euro to visit so it's worth it.
By far one of the underrated churches I have ever visited and i have visited many. I have been to a lot of cities and countries and by far this church deserves recognition. We were completely in awe. The art work and the detail of the carvings was fantastic. I have become a bit bored of visiting churches until i visited here. Out of respect i took no photos. We did spend a good 45 minutes inside though. Each little alcove had something special and unique. We definitely hold this place as a special memory.
