Another madrasa in Fes that has been functioning for centuries is the Sahrij Madrasa. The building derives its name from the pool of water situated within the courtyard. Surrounding this pool, the quad is decorated with stucco, glazed tiles and carved wood. Motifs from the Quran adorn the wall like other madrasas in Fes. Traditional Moroccan mosaics adorn the walls in colourful patterns. The colours in this mosaic are said to have a philosophical significance. Each colour represents some of the worldly values that form the basis of teaching in this school. It was built in the year 1321 and even today, you will see students learning in the various rooms of the building.
