Vatulele is a small island that neighbors Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu. Covering a total area of 32 square kilometers, the island is home to four villages. With the most common farming being that of coconut and taro, it is known for its Red Prawns and Petroglyphs, that are, stone carvings from an archaic time which are almost 3000 years old. The island is a coral and volcanic island, with the most gorgeous corals. Since this is quite an unexplored place in Fiji, the aquatic life is undisturbed, and you will often spot some of the bigger fish, species which are not easily seen in Fiji.
One unique thing that is noticed when you visit this island is the continuous sound of clubbing. This is the tiresome process that the villagers undertake to create the Tapa cloth. Home to Fiji’s best artisans, Tapa cloth, or Masi, is a paper made out of the bark of the mulberry tree. Then it is painted with the traditional designs. Masi painting and rock painting is very famous here. If you’re in Fiji, this is an off-beaten path that you can explore.
