This monumental Renaissance fort is built right into the 14th century defencive walls of Florence. It’s also the city’s largest historical monument. It’s infamous in that because it was built during times of frequent political upheaval, it was built as a defence against threats from inside the city rather than from the outside. Its main features are the five great gates and the restored Monumental Quarter (with added pavilions). The fort is now used as a conference centre; unfortunately, the fort can only be visited conference attendees. If you really want to visit, see what’s on at the fort, and if you can wrangle an invitation or a ticket.
