My wife and I used this station this past Sunday, as I had read it is closest to the Leaning Tower. It was a bit confusing as to where we should walk once off the train. Anyway, we returned a few hours later for our trip back. I agree it is a somewhat eerie place. I expected more people would have used this station due to its convenient location. After dark it was indeed a ghost town, and I felt a bit uneasy, except that outside the station itself were about 3-4 police officers. They were kind of milling around over there, but we felt much safer. I had to read the board to realize we needed to catch the train on the next platform, which required going downstairs in the elevator and walking through that subway-ish tunnel. It wasn't a long walk by any stretch, as it was only one platform over. However, I'm glad we arrived a bit early, as it did take a few moments to figure out where were and where we needed to be. Sad to hear about some pickpocket incidents here. Of course, my review is based on our isolated experience. That said, based on other reviews, if we ever return to Italy for another vacation (this was our first time in the country), and we decide to see Pisa again I'd probably opt for the central station.
Google will direct you north of the station on the wrong side of the tracks. If walking, you must go through the tunnel on the footpath and take the stairs that are at the halfway point in the tunnel. If you go to the end of the tunnel you've gone too far.
My friend and I got pickpocketed in the short 10min we were at the station. Within minutes of getting off our train from La Spezia to change to the train heading for Florence, a gypsy told us the elevator wasn’t working so we had to carry our luggages up and down the stairs, only to get pickpocketed by the group of 3 ladies (some people mentioned in earlier reviews?). Two of them walked in front to distract while the other one walked behind. In the middle of the day the platform is pretty empty and there’s no security so be careful. Even after the incident happened there were other gypsies waiting around for targets.
I was being pick-pocketed by 3 gypsy ladies on my second day of my trip. One of them tried to distract me while the other two were at the back of me. Made a police report but nothing can be done. Just be careful!
That part of Pisa where you can visit the city of Lucca by train.
