Florence’s most important fortification was built between 1590 and 1595 on the highest hill of the Boboli Gardens. This particular spot had always been thought of as the weakest in the city. Consequently, the fort’s placement lets it look out over the entire city. Troops were garrisoned here for 100 years after its completion, though its main purpose was to protect the Medici faily and the city. The fort is also famous for being the spot where Galileo made the astronomical observations that made him infamous in his time. Today, you get to see:

• The architecture, which is mix of Italian Renaissance and military styles.
• The Vasari corridor, which h connected the fort to the Palazzo Vecchio.
• Frescoes on the fort walls.
• The Palazzina di Belvedere, an opulent villa to which the Medici could escape in times of strive.
