Florissant Fossil Quarry, Florissant Reviews - Write a Review

  • A younger guy was running it when we went and was very helpful. Well worth it. We do a lot of digging for gem stones ourselves, it nice to see good people making this open to the public.

  • Florissant quarry was a great stop for my son and myself on our 3500 mile geology excursion. For those who gave this site bad reviews obviously have not prepared themselves ahead of time, or knew what to expect. Looking for fossils in shale is not like picking up shells on the beach. It takes time and patience, and can be hit or miss at times. Unlike some other quarries where the stone splits into thick pieces the shale at Florissant splits into very thin layers and can take some practice to get it right. We found plant leaves and insect wings with no problems.

  • I had fun here. Mostly found plant fossils, but there were a few really nice ones, and one of the other groups that was there at the same time found a dragonfly. They could probably use with a little sprucing up of the signs and parking to make the place look a little more visitor friendly. A larger staff would help too, but I know that is very much dependent on their frequency of business, which does not look like it's very busy most of the time. I plan on going back with my family when my daughter is a little bit older and can handle the tools.

  • I can't say much. Piles and Piles of rubble. Two pot head women take money, give you scraper, razor and show you what you can't keep. It took me about 5 min to realize there were nothing in those piles of crap. When I said something they brought out a few good pieces from the back and that was the only thing that was worth keeping.(couple of leaves, sticks and so on. was a waste of half a day. Should have done something else that day. Remember, you will be going through piles of broken shale that had been picked through and picked through.
