Sam's Point Dwarf Pine Ridge, Cragsmoor Reviews
Sam's point and the ice caves were a fantastic place to hike, we came here over the weekend with our boys 8 and 12. The hike is strenuous, steep but with paved and gravel paths. Women were hiking with strollers and plenty of people were with dogs on the main path which offers tons of beautiful views. If you'll be hiking with young kids under 6 and dogs I would not recommend the ice caves path or the falls, these paths are slippery, dangerous and at times you must climb ladders. This was worth the trip just for the main path but we recommend the ice caves if you are up for a challenge. We did not get to the falls and we will be returning for that trail I have heard is beautiful. we made it to Sam's point, breathtaking views, be careful not to get too close to the edge, and ice caves which were very cool. The ice caves have a few dark crevices which have a solar powered motion sensor light which dimly lit the space. I recommend a flashlight which helped. Bring a backpack with a picnic lunch and lots of water.
The hike is nice to get to the caves. Not too long or difficult, but also not too short. The caves themselves are fun. It's all a clear safe path, but there are a few points that get more narrow and really makes it feel like you're exploring the unknown. There's also some spectacular views from the top!
This place is one of the most peaceful places I have ever been to. It's a long hike with lots of places to go. All of the sites, no matter where you are, are breathtaking. You go through forests, open land and to hills that look over New York at the end you reach a beautiful waterfall that goes very far down. Another trail takes you to the ice caves which seem frozen in time, but make sure you bring a flashlight because it is Pitch Black inside. In total the hike is more than 6 miles but the terrain is easy.
Wonderful hiking experience. However make sure that you are prepared to hike. The 2 mile hike to the waterfall felt much longer as the terrain is left mostly natural. It was awesome to see actual ice in the caves wish we spent more time looking but we were focused on getting through. HIGHLY recommend. Awesome views. Well worth the 10$ parking fee.
Beautiful views, despite a fire in 2016. Ice Cave is a must-see. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes. If you come here in June/July there's plenty of blueberries and huckleberries to pick; they're delicious.
