The Dun Deardail fort is part of the Dun Deardail trail and dates back to first millennium BC. In its hay day, the fort would have been easily spotted even from distance and its is believed that it was rebuilt on the same grounds multiple times through the course of history. The summit itself is a view to behold and overlooks the Nevis river located around 300 meters below the height of the mountain. The entire fort area covers more than 1200 square meters and has a pear shaped layout. Although much of its structure is gone you can still find masonry walls peeking out form the grass. There are levelled areas believed to be man made and the path on the north-west of the area looks was the main entrance to the fort.
For many, this is just another hike to see the Glen Nevis or to juts get away form the downtown area and explore the wilderness but if you look close you can find small remains of the fort that once would have been the Celtic foothold. The view of Glen Nevis from here is sublime and if you are visiting the place during rainy season, the entire stretch is nothing less than spellbinding!
