Being the fort that gave the city its name, the old fort has become a laid back green space that still holds the ruins of the fortification constructed in 1690. The current fortifications were built on the grounds of a former wooden citadel that dated back to the mid 17th century. The wooden defences were replaced by stronger stone fortification walls and it soon became foothold for King William and his army. In 1692, the King offered to pardon those against him if they swore their allegiance to him. However, Captain Robert Campbell of Glen Lyon attacked the fort in 1692 and sieged the area. In 1746, the Jacobites attacked the fort since the fortification were not only strategically made but also accommodated heavy artillery.

All through the early 19th century, the place served as a garrison for the army but in 1864, the fort was sold to Christina Cameron Campbell who added the gardens to the castle grounds. Even though many modifications were made to the fort over the years, today, you can still find the original sally port and the original fortification walls. The place has benches spread across the grounds and offers beautiful panoramic views of the mountains and the river along with the skyline of the city located at the foot of the mountains.
