The construction of this majestic cathedral began in 1939 and it took a whole lot of time to complete- nearly 40 years! It was designed by French architect George Mounier and the design was allegedly inspired by the Grand Cathedral in cologne.
This is the third largest cathedral in Brazil and is set in Gothic-Roman style. There is a seating capacity of 5000 worshipers, the chapel of Joseph-the patron saint of Brazilian state of Ceara is on the left nave and the small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption is on the right. The central alter of the cathedral was brought over all the way from Verona. The Crypt is one of the striking features of the cathedral and is named as Crypt of the Adolescents. It has six alters devoted to saints who died in their teenage years. The depiction of Jesus in the crypt alter shows him as an adolescent. The stained glass windows are also worth observing.

A lovely, airy, concrete cathedral with amazing stained glass that captures Fortaleza’s sunlight perfectly. It’s definitely a perfect symbol for the city - colourful, vibrant, larger than life and also slightly falling to pieces at the same time. With all the doors open, there is a terrific breeze which cools down the whole place. Just across the road from the central markets and shopping areas
The Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Joseph is a historical monument, located in the center of the city, and stands out for its architectural grandeur. This catholic church was built in 1978, in Roman-Gothic style, but on the grounds of an old chapel of Our Lady of Amparo from the 17th century. Its name venerates the Saint Joseph as the patron of Ceará. Currently this Cathedral is the third largest in the country, with capacity for five thousand people.
Nice old church ⛪
It's the city cathedral, just don't walk around with your camera hanging on the neck...
