Situated on the outback of Pearl River Delta, Foshan is a Chinese prefectural city in the Central Guangdong province. The City has a long history that traces back to more than 5000 years. Originally named as Lihua Township, Foshan is known as the four great ancient towns in China along with Hankou, Jingde and Zhuxian. The name Foshan was only used after the people of Tang Dynasty noticed light emitting from Buddha statues excavated at a hill site (Foshan means Buddha hill). Since then, it became a religious centre and was regarded as Chancheng. Foshan was identified as a city in 1925 and attained a prefecture level by 1974.
