There is an area in the water here on the north of Fraser Island, just off the shore, Breaksea Split, which was notorious for the sheer number of ships it sank. Even Captain Cook sank here. To help ships bypass it, this Lighthouse was built. It’s the tallest in Queensland, at 86 feet high, and it’s still active. Once powered by kerosene, today, it’s powered by solar panels. It’s light can been seen from 27 miles away.
At the very top of the tower, there is a cantilevered iron balcony, from where you have a marvellous view of the sea, the cliffs, and the coastline. There’s a cemetery garden at the foot of the tower, so maintain decorum.
