It's funny that this shrine is not more famous because it is an absolute treasure in every conceivable way. Let's count the ways. Firstly, it was built in 72AD which makes this the oldest shrine in the city. Secondly, it is dedicated to one of the gods of fire - Atago-sama, one of the only three shrines in the country to be dedicated to that god. Thirdly, it has a fantastic location on a high hill. True, you have to climb a steep path to get up there but the views are totally worth it. Fourthly, there are over 2,000 cherry trees on the shrine's grounds which makes it extremely popular during cherry blossom season. Fifthly, there are so many festivals associated to it - New Year’s, Tanabata (Star) festival, Hozuki summer festival, Shichi-go-san children's festival, a fire festival and the Dai-Saito Homa Ceremony. It is said to be an auspicious place to pray for new beginnings. And considering that this is the god of fire it's also where people who want to give up smoking come to pray.

The reward for climbing the hundred or more steps to the Atago Shrine is a panoramic view of the northern coastal area of Fukuoka City. Since the surrounding landscape is quite flat and there are not many distinctive landmarks apart from the iconic Fukuoka Tower to the northeast; the scene is not a spectacular one. There is a building on the right side of the road further up from the parking lot. There is an elevator inside that goes to the top of the hill where the shrine is located.
Nice temple with a really excellent view over the city. The smell of incense as I walked up the steps to the shrine was great.
Excellent views of the Northern parts of Fukuoka city. The shrine was quite small compared to other major shrines in Fukuoka. Although the carpark up on the hill is free, expect to queue for about an hour on weekends during peak hours.
Nice sacred place to visit, like hiking to the shrine and seeing Fukuoka scenery. Nice weather!
nice place..beautiful shrine i can took pic fokuoka tower from here, very beautiful view
