This small island, only 12 kilometre in circumference, was the site where a national treasure of Japan, the golden seal, was discovered. The seal is an ancient one, thought to be from 2000 years ago, given to Japan by the Emperor of China. And though now the seal itself is in the Fukuoka Museum, the spot of its discovery has been transformed int a beautiful park with flowers for every season. From the highest point on the island, atop an observation deck is one of the finest views the city has to offer - the sea, the harbour on the mainland, and the beautifully illuminated panorama of the city itself. The atmosphere on the island is rustic and rural. Visitors should come hungry - the many stalls along the harbourside serve some of the best seafood around. Check out the fishermen's shrine. Several kilometres east of the shrine, you will find a popular beach.
