Originally located in Imaizumi, this shrine was moved to its current location by Nagamasa Kuroda, first feudal lord of Fukuoka clan, in 1612, as he believed it would protect the city from evil. The shrine is dedicated to the kami of scholarship, Sugawara-no-Michizane. The Tenjin area is named after him, as was called Tenjin (Heavenly One) after his death. Prettily decorated with a Torii gate and a carp pond, it is a slice of tranquility in an otherwise bustling little district.
