Spread over 3,800 hectares of land along the Atlantic shore of Cape Breton Island is the Gabarus Wilderness Area. This park features an extensive barrier beach system along with many water lagoons and lakes. The composition of beaches ranges from cobble to sand. This protected area features a wide range of flora like beach pea, dusty miller, seabeach sandwort, sea-lungwort, purple angelica, iris, scotch lovage, wild strawberry, and seaside plantain. This nature reserve is also home to many species of animals like the Harbour seals and grey seals.
