When the Office of Public Works tried to expand operation onto this site in 1997, they got the surprise of their life – archaeological remains of a 13th century building that had fallen into ruins, been built over, and forgotten.
And yet, once upon a time, this used to be an important medieval building. It was owned by the Anglo-Norman De Burgo family, and was Galway’s principal municipal building. Court was held here, taxed were paid here, and banquets were hosted here. It was in the 15th century, when the ‘Tribe’ families seized power, that the house fell into disrepair.
Today, 11000 artefacts have been recovered from the site. The site itself is enclosed in glass panelling; a viewing gangway has been installed, which lights up the ruins from above. You can walk along this, where the panels explain the significance of the place.
