Rumtek Monastery - Review

Sikkim is known for its incredibly serene calm and the lovely monasteries engulfed in it. Rumtek Monastery in many ways epitomizes this calm and peace. The Monastery, also known as the Dharmachakra center, is a stunning place to see in Gangtok.

The Rumtek Monastery Buddha figurine, is certainly worth seeing. Set in a lovely golden hue he is a symbol of peace. The lovely colors in which the walls, the pillars and the exterior of the building have been decorated are very pretty. As you walk up to the monastery, the subtle grind of the prayer wheels sets the atmosphere.

It is a monastery and hence a place where these monks live and worship so one needs to be careful and respectful but if you want to observe this part of Gangtok’s culture, the place is a definite must visit.

Rumtek Monastery, Gangtok Reviews

  • It is Buddhist Monastery or temple the oldest one in Sikkim. Maximum tourists come to visit this place. It is peaceful place in the outskirt of Gangtok. It is 16 km from Gangtok. You can see a beautiful scenery from this place. You can see monks in maroon unique dress. Some people go here to know about the life of the monks.

  • Nice Buddhist temple, good pupils, an awesome place to know about the ancient King of Sikkim. It has King's house and is the only Intellectual property left in India that the King’s family have. King's daughter takes care of this house. We're not allowed to enter the property. Only King's family visits there during Buddhist festivals. Awesome place to hang out. Highly recommended.

  • I had read that Rumtek monastery is one of the largest in Sikkim and the architecture of the monastery is one of the finest in the world and resembles the original one in Tsurphu, Tibet. You need an Indian ID proof to enter this monastery. When we entered, it was prayer time and we were able to enter the temple and hear the prayers. The music was very different and somewhat scary to hear before we entered the main temple. A place worth visiting.

  • It's a Buddhist religious place. Entering the place gives peace and serenity. Can Spend hours over here. One should visit this place early in the morning. The smell of the local dhoop(a kind of coniferae leaves ) will make you feel more spiritual from within.

  • Beautiful and Grand. Was fortunate to witness a prayer session in progress . Was a fantastic experience. Fittin the service, also got to see the playful side of young student monks :) the gentle way they are guided. Hope to see this Again.
