Built in true Rococo style between 1708 and 1738, the Franziskanerkloster St. Anton’s cupola (onion dome) can be spotted even from a distance. In the 17th century, a small chapel called Antoniuskapelle was built here by cousins Jakob and Johann Lidl. After the Spanish War of Succession, this church was replaced by the present-day church which was inaugurated in 1708. In the 1730s, the church was extended under the supervision of pastor Dr. Matthias Samweber and the onion dome, priest house and grotto were added to its structure. Beautiful frescoes and murals were added to the church during this time too. Fun fact: the frescoes that can be seen on the cupola are the only surviving work of art of Johann Evangelist Holzer.
Today, the church is one of the most love historic buildings in the region. It is also an important pilgrimage in the Alps. The interiors consist of a beautiful gilded altar enhanced by high arches- one of which bears the statue of Christ on the cross.
The location of the church is one of the highlights. It is nestled at the foot of the Wank mountain surrounded by the majestic Alps. Annually, the place welcomes pilgrims from all around the world to celebrate the feast of St Anton on June 13. The pilgrimage consists of a procession, traditional music, preaching by the church pastors and the ceremonial firing of a cannon. On any other day, the church is a beautiful spot to see surreal artwork and to simply spend a few moments in silence during a hike through the alps.
