Richard Strauss was one of the most notable composers, conductors and political figures in 20th century Germany. The museum is housed in the mansion of Ludwig Mayer-Doß that dates back to the late 19th century and was opened to celebrate the 50th death anniversary of Strauss.

Strauss hit Opera success in 1905 and in 1908, he used his massive wealth to build a house in Garmisch. Even though his private house is not open to the public, the institute has managed to form a collective data of his life- be it his work, his music, his photographs, his family life or even his role in shaping the politics in Germany. You can find books about the musician here along with a collection of his compositions and personal writing. The place also organizes musical concerts where young, talented musicians play Strauss’s music and keep his legacy and life of work alive even today.
