Plainpalais Cemetery is the most well known and the oldest burial ground in Geneva. Famous writers, politicians, performers, actors find their final resting place here. This graveyard is also known as the ‘ Geneva Pantheon’. The Cemetery was established in the 15th century at the time of the European epidemics that took a lot of lives.
A complete sense of serenity and the calmness pervades this burial place. Located at the central part of the city on the Rue des Rois, the cemetery is home to the graves of people from this city’s history like John Calvin and Sofiya Dostoyevsky amongst many others.
Cimetière des Rois, the local name of this burial ground translates to Cemetery of the Kings. This burial ground was also the setting of the final rites to the great personalities of Geneva like Jean Calvin, the first cartoonist of the modern age Rodolphe Töppfer, François Simon, the great Swiss actor and Jorge Luis Borges the famous Argentinian author.. Beautiful and peaceful place
A number of well known people are buried here. These include Jean Calvin and others. The cemetery is relatively small and can be entered from three different entrances. It is a relatively small out of the way cemetery.
