Off the beaten path

The battlefields of Flanders: Not every visitor to Belgium appreciated its significance in the first World War, and it's from Ghent that you can access one of the more famous battlefields of that conflict. It is 30 miles outside of the city, and entry is free it is only closed at Christmas and New Year.

There are reasonable range of places to stay in Ghent, but it's not a huge city so there aren't as many options as in Brussels.
