Sint-niklaaskerk is one of the most prominent and oldest landmarks of Ghent and its construction is said to have begun in the early 13th century. It was built as a replacement for a Romanesque church that was present on this site earlier. This Roman Catholic Church used blue-grey stone from the Tournai area and was popular amongst the guilds who used to carry out their business nearby. The central tower of Sint-niklaaskerk served as an observation tower until Ghent’s belfry was built. One of the most notable treasures of the Church is the organ that was made by the renowned organ maker, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. Inside the Church, one can also find, Baroque paintings and 18th century statues.
