Situated in the Powder River Basin, which is famous for being rich in coal, Eagle Butte Mine was opened in the year 1978. This open pit mine produces low sulfur, sub bituminous coal which is used for power generation domestically. The mine owners went through a merger in 2009 and is currently owned by Alpha natural Resources. Since its inception, the mine has been able to ship more than 521,000,000 short tons of coal to its customers. It is also a recipient of a number of awards including Excellence in Quality.
