1.6km off the coast of the main city is the Giresun island. According to a popular legend, the island was the abode of the female warrior clan called the Amazons. You can still see one of the temples this clan built on the island. Besides the temple, you can see ramparts and fortifications of the island from its heyday. Inside are two presses; they could be used for making wine or oil. There is a monastery on the island which is said to have been built in the 5th or 6th century AD. This island is covered with trees that have medicinal properties or are commercially valuable. This is said to be the only liveable island in the Black Sea.
