BorPukhuri, popular referred to as the Sivasagar tank is said to have been dug in the year 1734 by Queen Ambika in the memory of her husband, Swargadeo Sivasingha. The city thereby derives its names from this historical tank. Apart from the tank’s historical significance, the entire bank is of prime significance because of the three temples, a Buddhist Monastery, a Church, two colleges, a Museum and parks and gardens. The three temples present at BorPukhuri are those of Lord Shiva, Devi Durga and Lord Vishnu. The water level of the tank is surprisingly high and remains the same throughout the year irrespective of the amount of rain.
