Mahabaleswara Temple - Review

One of the most important attractions of Gokarna, The temple is very well known because of a beautiful legend attributed to it. It is here where Ravana, the demon king had to rest the ‘Atmalinga’ statue when he was tricked by Lord Ganesh who at last built a temple around. The temple is built in proper Dravidian architecture. It is said that Shivaji, the great emperor had visited this temple once to offer his prayers. The carved stone image of Lord Shiva inside the sanctum is said to be 1500 years old.

  • It’s a Historical temple, beautiful architecture and peaceful ambience. Very near to Gokarna beach. This is a must to visit this place in Gokarna. Awesome place... One of the best places. Many places around here to visit...best place for refreshment.

  • This is a must visit place once in a lifetime. Called the "kashi of south". Among all the renouned temples of Lord Shiva this is the most important. The "athma ling" of Lord Shiva is here and only here. The one place in the World! There is an story as to how this came to be here. It's believed that Ravana the king of Asuras was among the most aderent follower of Lord Shiva. He meditated and pleased Lord Shiva; when Lord asked what reward he wanted Ravana asked for the " athma ling" . All the Gods in heven were afraid that Ravana would take the "ling" to his kingdom "srilanka" and become so powerful that it would be a challenge for the Gods to deal with him. They then persuaded Lord Ganesh ( Lord Shiva son) to help. Lord Ganesh smartly tricked Ravana to put it down at this location ( there is another story for this) and hence it's been here. Ravana tried to pull.it out with all his strength and hence the ling turned and stretched that now resemble the ear of cow hence the name gokarna for the town. (shape of cows ear)

  • Every Lord shiva devotee must visit this temple... Cheap spacious rooms available too nearby the Bus Stand... The beach adds to the beauty of the village.

  • A peaceful devoted experience that enhances your power and spirits. No entry for foreigners. That's a drawback that no outsider can feel the devotion. This place is very clean. So a must visit place for Indians!
