Declared as a National Monument in 1937, Old Provost provides a lot of historical facts about the old city of Grahamstown. This is a military prison that was built in year 1838 and follows the system of panoptic prison system. This was done in order to fortify the small city of Grahamstown and also has an old military hospital. The hospital is now a part of Rhodes University Botany Department. The prison has a shape of a quarter circle with eight cells. Each cell has an area of 2 meter by 3 meters. The prison has been renovated and now has a nice cafe for the visitors.
