Lipan point marks the start of the 8 mile long Tanner trail down the South Rim. The trail starts out by crossing the rim plateau to the canyon edge. It then enters the Tanner Canyon and starts a series of switchbacks, which become very steep and rocky. The descent is considered to be one of the steepest rim descents in the Grand Canyon. Due to its difficulty it has become one of the most popular trek among trekking and hiking enthusiasts. There is scarce water availability so carrying a bottle is recommended.

  • Definitely DEFINITELY worth a stop by on your way out of the grand canyon. One of the tour guides in the park recommended this spot as THE place to watch the sunset on our visit, even though it was 12 miles outside of the actual park. Thankfully we ended up taking his advice, leaving the park a little early to catch the view, and it was well worth it. Pictures don't do it justice. Please try and stop by here on your visit, if not for the sunset, then in the morning on your way into the park. It's a very scenic drive and worth the time and drive!

  • Great overlook, much less crowded than the ones near GC Village. Well worth a ride. You can see quite a piece of Colorado here, more than from other places.

  • Great view point among the other fantastic spots starting with Navajo point all the way till the village at the end of south rim. Recommended to have extra layers as a backup if you are going anytime other than the 3-4 months of summer (Jun-Sep) since the winds can get quite strong.

  • Nice Serene place. Not too crowded

  • Started our day at Mather Point. Although I got a beautiful sunrise shot, I really wanted to get a panoramic picture that I’d be able to print. As we headed to Horseshoe Bend we stopped at this point without thinking too much about it. Wow were we glad to have stopped. I got my pano here and then some! We were there on July 5th. The crowds weren’t that bad at all and even the temperatures were fine!
