The Universalmuseum Joanneum is Austria's oldest and second largest museum. It was founded in 1811 by Archduke Johann the Province of Styria with the mission to collect and to research the nature, art and culture of the country in order to actively promote the intellectual and technological development of Styria. Today, the 17 collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum comprise around 4.7 million objects. As a memory and real archive of Styria, they form a versatile basis for our exhibitions, which are presented at 12 architecturally valuable museum locations. We use the universal diversity of our collections to discuss topical and geographical issues in current scientific and artistic contexts. We are a museum that makes knowledge accessible to our visitors and thereby promotes critical reflection. On this basis, we understand the Universalmuseum Joanneum as an important social field of action, which determines the intellectual and cultural consciousness in Styria as a part of Europe. To fulfill the tasks assigned to it, the Universalmuseum Joanneum, which has more than half a million visitors per year, employs around 420 staff members. In addition to scientific journals, exhibition catalogs and annual reports, the museum publishes a series of books on its collections. Information folders, newsletters, social media and a monthly program supplement the information offer. The Universalmuseum Joanneum, winner of the Museum Prize of the Council of Europe, is the most important scientific and cultural institution in Styria. In the course of the nineteenth century, it brought to the country important institutions such as the Montanuniversität Leoben, the Graz University of Technology (today: Archduke Johann University), the Styrian Provincial Archive and the Styrian Provincial Library. Since the collections have been owned by the province of Styria since its founding in 1811, the Joanneum has long been closely tied to the state administration. In 2003, however, after careful consideration, it was converted into a non-profit limited liability company in order to remain competitive in international museum operations. Since 1 January 2018 Wolfgang Muchitsch and Alexia Getzinger, MAS, at the head of the Universalmuseum Joanneum GmbH. In order to promote the global networking of the museum and, in particular, to ensure high-quality exhibition operations in the Kunsthaus Graz, the search for partnerships with national and international museum and cultural institutions is being intensified. In the exhibitions, all areas of the show collections are to be presented in an audience-effective and timely manner. The focus here is on the optimal interaction of the various locations of the museum, whose diversity characterizes the unique character of the Universalmuseum.
